Behind the Scenes: Designing MSL Training with AI Tools
Last week, Anthropic announced Opus 4, their newest, fanciest, most awesome AI model so far, and suddenly, my to-do list didn’t stand a chance. You know that feeling? When something new and exciting pulls you in? You tell yourself it’s still productive work (kind of).
Instead of diving into my planned tasks, I indulged in an afternoon AI experiment. I set out to see how different AI models could help me build a new, massive, multi-module MSL training program: the kind that truly moves the needle on skills development, not just another forgettable workshop. Here’s an overview of my experience designing MSL training with AI tools.
My AI Experiment Toolkit
My AI toolkit for the day included o3, GPT-4o-mini, GPT-4.5, and the shiny new Opus 4. And for extra creative fuel, I even tossed in a deep research report for comparison (because I just love these deep research reports). My aim? To leverage AI as my thinking partner, zooming out to capture the grand vision of the training at 30,000 feet, and zooming in for detailed, innovative workshop concepts.
I wrote a prompt and tried it in all 4 models. When I wrote a follow-up prompt, I also ran that in each model. I combed through each response and compared them side by side.
Overall, they all produced pretty similar results. But each model had something unique to offer: nuances and some fun nuggets. None of the models stood out as a clear winner, but I was especially impressed with Opus 4’s output and ended up using it as the foundation for my working draft. Then I went through with a fine-tooth comb, added in my wisdom, and pulled out pieces from other analyses that I liked.
From Big Vision to Concrete Framework
Creating impactful, innovative training programs isn’t about small ideas. It’s about envisioning comprehensive programs that deeply resonate and skillfully drive change. With AI, I got exactly that.
Within hours, I had a detailed outline of my “Influence Lab,” a robust 3-pillar, 9-module training, beautifully integrated with our existing content. This program can be individual, stand-alone 60-minute sessions, a full-blown 2-day in-person training or any combo in between.
Previously, designing an MSL training with a comprehensive outline of this scope would have taken me days of intense effort. With AI, I managed it in one focused afternoon. Sure, a lot of parts will be refined. AI doesn’t yet perfectly match my storytelling style or training approach. But that’s beside the point.
The real magic is how AI accelerates creativity and scale. Suddenly, huge multi-layered projects like this Influence Lab training are not just feasible, they’re fast and fun.
Real-World Applications for MSLs & Medical Affairs
This experience sparked numerous ideas for MSL-specific applications. Imagine replacing piecemeal training for sales reps at National Sales Meetings (NSM) with a robust program that rapidly accelerates their understanding and skills. Helping reps perform better in the field is a great way to demonstrate impact.
Or consider building a long-term follow-up plan for congresses. Or elevating pre-meeting planning from just prepping for the next meeting to crafting a comprehensive, multi-year, multi-touchpoint relationship-building strategy.
These are the topics we cover in our AI for MSL Excellence training. It’s not about shiny tools. It’s about using AI to do what actually matters: think strategically, improve skill development, and scale efforts.
From Outline to Action
The next step is clear. I now have to build this Influence Lab training. I sent the massive outline to my training partner Sarah Snyder (we build everything together), and her response was exactly what I hoped for: “This is it.”
We now have the skeleton to build and execute this program focused on real skill development.
Final Thoughts: Designing MSL Training with AI Tools
This wasn’t just a fun experiment. It was a reminder of what’s possible when we use AI not just to save time, but to think more boldly. I didn’t build a slide deck or a one-off workshop. I built the foundation of a scalable, skills-based program that brings months of content together in a meaningful way.
AI made something that once felt impossible feel easy.
I don’t want more cookie-cutter MSL training. I want labs. Experiences. Frameworks and systems that actually build real capabilities.
That’s what AI helped me start, and that’s what we help teams build in our AI for MSL Excellence training.
Let’s build something better.
If you’re curious about the Influence Lab team training, reach out. It’s turning out even better than I imagined.
